Inspiration: Global warming is real and it’s a problem. While I recognize that going to see the glaciers does nothing to actually combat global warming, I sensed that the experience seeing glaciers in person would give me a deeper appreciation for the severity of the situation and what can be lost. Resources: Alaska.org - Best Alaska Glaciers Fun Facts: Glaciers store about 69 percent of the world's fresh water. If all land ice melted, sea levels would rise approximately 230 feet worldwide (click here for why that's a bad thing). Glacial ice often appears blue because years of compression gradually make the ice extremely dense. Dense ice absorbs a small amount of red light, leaving a bluish tint in the reflected light, which is what we see. If glacier ice is white, that typically indicates that there are many tiny air bubbles still in the ice. [National Snow & Ice Data Center]
